Tape Row Removal Troubleshooting

Amplify Tape Row Tape is designed for long-lasting wear and easy, mess-free removal. If something feels off during removal, don’t worry! — It’s usually just a tiny technique adjustment that makes all the difference.

Troubleshooting | Tape Row Removal | Tape Separates from Itself During Removal

What’s Happening:

The Tape Row weft is removed cleanly, but the tape itself seems to split in half during removal. Half of the tape came off with the weft, while the other half of the stretchy tape strip remains in the hair.

Why it Happens:

This can occur when removing too quickly or not gripping BOTH the tape and the weft as it’s removed from the biological hair.  Pro tip: It’s all about methodical control.  If necessary, use gloves for a firmer grip, and work in small horizontal sections.

How To Prevent:

  • Pinch to stabilize the biological hair between the scalp and weft for client comfort and maximum control, then spray generously with BREAK UP Panel Remover at the corner, and in-between wefts as needed when met with resistance.
  • Use the tail end of your comb at the corner to carefully separate the top weft and tape, from the biological hair and bottom weft.
  • Work in small, controlled, horizontal sections and check as you go- to ensure you are removing both the tape and weft together, away from the biological hair.
  • As soon as you discover a split, where the tape is left behind, go back and reattach the tape to itself with pressure. Then repeat the removal process above.
  • If you cannot reattach: Begin again. As before, pinch between biological hair and remaining tape to stabilize, re-saturate at the corner with BREAK UP Panel Remover and as needed when met with resistance, removing remaining tape in small, controlled, horizontal sections.
  • Finish by fully saturating biological hair with BREAK UP Panel Remover. Use the spine of your comb in a backcombing motion to easily remove any remaining residue.

Troubleshooting | Tape Row Removal | Tape Row Weft is Out, But All of the Tape is Left in The Hair

What’s Happening:

The weft removes cleanly from the head but is separated from the full strip of stretchy tape, which was left behind in the biological hair.

Why it Happens:

This can occur when removing too quickly or not gripping BOTH the tape and the weft as it’s removed from the biological hair.  Pro tip: Check as you go! As soon as you notice the tape separating from the weft, pause and move to the alternate side, or reconnect with pressure and begin again.

  • If you notice the weft separating from the tape, pause and move to the alternate side or reconnect the two by pinching them together with pressure, and begin again.
  • If you cannot reattach: As before, pinch between biological hair and remaining tape to stabilize, re-saturate at the corner with BREAK UP Panel Remover and as needed when met with resistance, removing full tape strip in small, controlled, horizontal sections.
  • Finish by fully saturating biological hair with BREAK UP Panel Remover. Use the spine of your comb in a backcombing motion to easily remove any remaining residue.

Troubleshooting | Tape Row Slipped Out of Hair

What’s Happening:

The entire weft or a corner of the weft and tape are detached from the biological hair without an immediately identifiable reason or stressor.

Why it Happens:

  • Something went wrong during home care, preparation, and/or application!
  • Home Care: Are they using the right shampoo? Oil-based shampoos, though promoting hydration and shine, can affect the bond of the tape and should be avoided!
  • Biological hair was not cleansed and clarified enough beforehand. Natural oils can affect adhesion and initial bond.
  • The Tape may have touched your fingertips before/during application.  Lotions and/or natural oils can affect adhesion and initial bond.
  • Tape Row was not heat-activated before application.
  • Not enough pressure was applied before and after the application.

How To Prevent:

  • Clarify the hair before application (no oils or product at the root) .
  • Heat-activate the Pre-Taped Tape Row (set flat iron no higher than 350°F) .
  • Do not touch the sticky surface of the tape while applying! Use a tail comb and work in small, controlled sections across the head.
  • Pressure-activate before and after application. Before applying, run the spine of your comb or a thumbnail across the white pretaped strip. Once the top and bottom Tape row have been applied, lock them into place with firm pressure by massaging the head across the entirety of the weft.
  • If it’s still not sticking, you may have too much hair between the wefts. Adjust accordingly.
  • Always ensure they are going home with the right home care products to ensure longevity.

Troubleshooting | Tape Row Removal | Removing Tape Row Residue

What’s Happening:

After removing the weft, a combination of adhesive residue and natural shed remains in the hair and is tough to comb out.

Why it Happens:

  • Talk to your client about their hot tools styling. If they are applying heat directly on the attachment point, this could re-activate the bond making residue more stubborn to remove. However, difficulty removing residue usually means more BREAK UP Panel Remover is needed, and/or removal combing techniques may need adjustment.
  • Pro Tip: BREAK UP is formulated for quick evaporation to support fast reapplications, so targeting small areas at a time, instead of applying product broadly across the whole head, will ensure clean and easy removals, with less product waste.

How To Prevent:

  • Pinch to stabilize the biological hair between the scalp and the remaining residue  for client comfort and maximum control.
  • Spray BREAK UP Panel Remover in small 2–3 inch sections directly where buildup is present, rather than soaking the whole head before you begin.  BREAK UP Panel Remover is alcohol based and evaporates quickly.
  • Use the spine of your comb (not the teeth) to gently work the residue down to the palm of your hand.
  • Residue will drag against dry hair. Once the residue is loosened, pinch into a small ponytail, fully saturate the dry ends with BREAK UP, and finish by using the spine of your comb in a backcombing motion to easily glide the residue out of the hair until clean.
